We make it a habit of eating local dishes whenever we visit a new country and have eaten in local corner restaurants, gourmet restaurants, side-streets cafes, on the street, and in the markets. Even my picky eaters know the rules – “go local or go home”. So far, everyone has always chosen to eat local classic specialties and as my children (incidentally the pickiest) once put it, “there’s not need coming all the way to a new place without eating their local foods.” I agree!
For foodies, “Food Journeys of a Lifetime: 500 Extraordinary Places to Eat Around the Globe“ is a good resource for discovering culinary traditions, new restaurants, famed chefs, and other gastronomy while taking in unique landmarks and landscape. It’s not a cook book, but a travel book for travelers who love exploring food as a part of the cultural experience of traveling to a new place.
